Sad Song for the New Breed, 1999, thousands of dissected paint tubes, sound device with solar panel (Mariakapel, Hoorn)
Sad Song for the New Breed is an installation that was first exhibited in the Mariakapel in Hoorn in 1999. The installation consists of several thousand paint tubes that have been cut open and arranged on their caps to form a field of flowers. An audio device that floats above the field produces a high, piercing sound and is powered by a solar panel. The installation not only challenges traditional painting mediums on formal grounds, but also places them within a social and environmental context.
